A throwback to our colonial past

•In the approaching presidential election we may learn more about ourselves as a nation than we do about the candidates.

In the context of an Ireland where 1,000 young people feel compelled to emigrate each week as a consequence of unemployment, the actual function of the president as an element of the body politic is no longer beyond question.

Most democracies around the world function perfectly well without an additional president and as such we might reasonably ask what does a president actually do in order to validate the €320,000-plus salary and €300,000-plus expense account?
