A little test for this work-to-rule
I AM a student in Trinity College. Many of the staff in the college are, in conjunction with their colleagues in the public sector generally, engaging in work-to-rule industrial action.
Given that they have so far been allowed to “opt out” of many of the tasks for which they are employed, without any sanction from their management, I have decided to follow their lead.
I will opt out of sitting my exams at the end of term.
I will also opt out of writing the essays I'm due to hand in over the next couple of weeks.
I presume the same standard that applies to college staff will be applied to me and that therefore I need not worry about my “work-to-rule” having any ramifications for my grade at the end of the year.
