A free ride

• I'm surprised that the Government hasn't yet targeted the 200,000 cyclists for all manner of taxes. Think of a yearly bicycle 'registration tax' of €30 (€6m a year), a cyclist's five-year licence at €30, and ongoing fines for breaking the traffic laws. The Government could also register and tax the current bicycle taxis and Segways which invade our footpaths.

There are motor tax offices already under-utilised around the country that have no problem adding new vehicle models to their database, so there can't be the 'too expensive to implement' excuse.

Or could it be that the cycle lobby thinks of itself as a 'sacred cow' that should get all manner of facilities but should be immune from taxes and regulation ?
