A dying breed

• We are preparing for a Budget that is predicted to be probably the worst since the foundation of the State. The last Budget was supposed to be the worst as was the one before that. But if there is one consistent characteristic in this Government, and the rotten one before, it is that is needs no lessons in dishing out low blows.

At this moment over half-a- million citizens of this country have failed to pay the €100 property charge. Some out of protest, but many others simply can't afford it.

On Wednesday everybody is going to be ordered to cough up multiples of that. They will be paying more for travel, have their child benefit slashed and the universal social charge will rise.
