1940 bombing not an accident

I see that some of your readers think that the bombing of Campile, Co Wexford, in 1940 was an accident (Letters, August 11 and 12).

I'm afraid I cannot agree for the following reasons:

  • If the pilots of the two planes thought they were over Wales they would have dropped all their bombs and not just a few.
  • Both planes would have been involved in dropping bombs and not just the one.
  • If it were a bombing raid on any part of the UK, there would have been more planes than just two involved.
  • It had all the hallmarks of a 'surgical' strike, for whatever reason.

It is to be assumed that the reason for the prompt German apology was that they were terrified of retaliation.
