I’m like Johnny Forty Coats this wintery weather, with all the layers I wear when sitting at my desk to write this column for the Sunday Independent. What warms me more than blasting the heater is taking the dogs for a walk.

I never mention the "W” word unless I’ve committed to going out. Because my doggy doolittles may have a limited vocabulary, but “walk” is one word they know by heart, having much the same affect as “mouse”, which sends them flying through their dog flap in a frenzy to sniff out those long-tailed little fellows. There’s a permanent curfew on “cat” because it also puts them on full alert.
