The Government is providing a significant amount of money, €40m in the current budget, to schools in disadvantaged communities to provide meals for school children.

This is an admirable scheme, especially as estimates tell us that one in five children are going to school or to bed hungry and that poor nutrition affects children's behaviour and concentration.

Now we learn, however, that over 100 schools, most of which are in deprived areas, cannot avail of the school meals programme because they do not have the necessary facilities - such as kitchens and cooking areas - or indeed personnel to administer the scheme and provide for these children in need.
