We're bottom of the class when it comes to tackling obesity

SOMETIMES you need only the evidence of your own eyes. The obesity crisis is certainly a case in point. In Ireland, 61pc of adults and 22pc of 5-12 year olds are overweight or obese. A stroll down any Irish high street would confirm that to be so.

There are many reasons for this, no least among them the fact that we live in a sedentary age where physical exercise is mostly optional rather than an everyday part of life.

A generation ago, children went out to play every day as a matter of course. Now, more often than not, outdoor pursuits are organised and regulated.
