We must put children first
IT has been a week when we have learned that the Celtic Tiger's legacy to our children is that they are growing up fatter, dumber, poorer than their parents.
Our education system has been shown up as one of the worst in the 34-member OECD while figures also show we are now the second fattest in the 27-member European Union as we fail to exercise or eat properly. Finance Minister Brian Cowen has meanwhile singled out child benefit for some of the Budget's most stringent cuts.
From the days of the hedge schools, Ireland enjoyed a reputation for punching above its weight when it came to learning. Now we punch below it. This is not chance.
