We must pass this Budget
ONE issue above all others faces the Dail on December 7. It is absolutely vital for the country, for every citizen, for children yet unborn, that the Budget is adopted on that date.
In the light of that essential need, and its implications for the handling and ultimate solution of the crisis in which our country is now embroiled, all other considerations fade into insignificance. This is not about the fate of one man or one party, but of a nation.
On the passage of the Budget, and on the other measures necessary to begin the process and the groundwork for economic recovery, hang our national solidarity and our international reputation. For the moment, we are not at the mercy of the markets. But we are engaged in intense negotiations with the EU and the IMF. We depend on their friendship and good will. To risk that would be treason.
