We cannot allow ESB plunge us into darkness
THE threatened ESB strike simply cannot be allowed to happen. Everybody appreciates the worry and uncertainty caused by problems with the ESB workers' pension scheme. After a long working life it is very dispiriting to find there are serious doubts about the funding to underpin the pensions these workers had believed were beyond doubt.
But these are grievances which must be dealt with via discussions through the well-developed and expensive ESB industrial relations mechanisms. They do not justify the threat of strike and the inevitable warnings of electricity supply disruption which are now threatened for the middle of next month.
The ESB workers are not the only ones who have had pension problems. Workers across many sectors have had this problem, along with reduced earnings and increasing demands to pay taxes and charges.
