OVER the years, Fine Gael has inflicted great damage on itself during its numerous and divisive leadership contests. The present confrontation threatens to do it equal harm, but in unique circumstances.

The Fianna Fail-Green coalition, and Taoiseach Brian Cowen personally, have been on the ropes since the publication of two devastating reports on the banking crisis. The reports leave no doubt as to Mr Cowen's share of culpability when he was Finance Minister between 2004 and 2008.
