Voice of reason must win out
If ever an event merited the tag "dialogue of the deaf", it was the four-minute section of the speech by Gerry Adams on Saturday that referred to the European fiscal treaty and the reply by Taoiseach Enda Kenny on RTE television yesterday.
This was not a discussion, but in each case a series of assertions. Neither of the two men sought to persuade the other to his viewpoint.
Both addressed themselves to viewers who will vote on the fiscal pact in Thursday's referendum, especially those who may have wavered in their opinions.
