The 45th president of America appears to be out of sorts, not just with himself, but with his party, the media, and much else. Yesterday, a former US labour secretary went so far as to suggest that Donald Trump represents a "clear and present danger to America" and must be removed from office.

Robert Reich's remarks were a response to the highly divisive campaign rally in Arizona which saw Mr Trump attack the "fake media" and "truly dishonest" journalists. He branded Mr Trump a "howling manchild" in the wake of the Charlottesville violence.

All of this is deeply worrying. Instead of stamping out fires Mr Trump risks igniting them. His latest attacks on stalwarts of his own party will do nothing to soothe nerves frayed by the increasingly truculent and divisive rhetoric.
