Tough task of enforcing law and order
The widespread public anxiety following the shocking violence at the Swedish House Mafia concert in the Phoenix Park has prompted a correct -- if only a partial -- response from Justice Minister Alan Shatter.
Yesterday Mr Shatter announced that the Garda Commissioner would meet MCD, the promoters of the concert, to discuss issues of security. Whatever the meeting may produce in the way of improved precautions, one must assume that the concerns of the Minister, and the Commissioner, range more widely.
Both the public anxiety and the official response are fully justified in view of the dismaying events in the Park: nine people injured, two seriously; one man stabbed four times; subsequent drug deaths. Much of the initial reaction centred on the question whether the police and security staff on duty might have done more to prevent stabbings which could well have proved to be fatal.
