Time for Taoiseach to answer valid questions
GARDA Commissioner Martin Callinan stood down from his post 11 months ago.
In that time, we have been left with more questions than answers. On the eve of his exit from office, on March 25, 2014, Mr Callinan was visited by then-Justice Department secretary general Brian Purcell, who has himself since moved from this pivotal post. Mr Purcell's departure from the Justice Department was followed by that of Justice Minister Alan Shatter.
In general terms, we know Mr Purcell conveyed to Mr Callinan Government concerns about how gardaí had taped phone conversations between suspects and their lawyers over a period of 30 years. But last May, Mr Purcell would not tell an Oireachtas committee what he did say to the Garda Commissioner.
