Time for radical thought on education
The good news is that we are rich in the numbers of talented young people who want to pursue excellence in higher education. The less welcome news is that demand for places may exceed supply - and pressure will continue to mount.
The Central Applications Office yesterday revealed that it had received its highest-ever number of applications for places in third-level colleges. But demand will quite likely exceed supply, and this problem will become more acute in the coming years.
This stark reality means that an issue which has been dodged in recent years - how third-level education is to be funded - can no longer be ignored.
