Time for FG to decide
After several months of phoney war the battle for the Presidency is gradually taking shape. With the Labour Party having nominated Michael D Higgins as its candidate and David Norris's Independent candidacy having apparently survived the Trinity senator's unfortunate encounter with ancient Greek philosophy, today it is Fine Gael's turn to choose its candidate in the battle for the Aras.
Following former MEP Avril Doyle's late withdrawal, the Fine Gael selection convention will have to choose between former European Parliament president Pat Cox and sitting MEPs Mairead McGuinness and Gay Mitchell.
It says something about the current strength of Fine Gael that, having struggled to find a suitable candidate in previous presidential elections, it now has three such strong potential candidates to choose from.
