Time for clarity on the IRA's position
Throughout the Troubles, the IRA and Sinn Féin made confusion their masterwork when manipulating public discourse to further their agendas. Summary execution and the bomb and bullet threw a shadow over these islands, but accountability was strategically avoided as evasion and obfuscation were the stock in trade. But the words of PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton haven't gone away. He took the opportunity once more to reiterate speculation that individual members of the IRA cooperated in the shooting dead of Kevin McGuigan. His courageously straight-talking contrasts sharply with the strangely muted position taken by our Government,
Defence Minister Simon Coveney has said the Government must remain "very cautious" when responding to comments that the Provisional IRA still exists.
The Government, as a signatory of the Good Friday Agreement, should understand just how grave a development this is.
