The time is right to cut income tax, so let's do it
AT long last comes a message from a Government minister with which we can instantly agree – and one which we look forward to see becoming a reality very soon. Enterprise Minister Richard Bruton writes in this newspaper today about the need to cut income tax. No, it is not a mirage.
Mr Bruton tells us that our income taxes are too high. They are a disincentive to work. They are an impediment to national economic recovery.
The minister tells us that experience shows that tax incentives frequently bring results. He cites the example of cutting VAT in the tourism and hospitality sectors soon after the Fine Gael-Labour Coalition took office in 2011. Unsurprisingly, it led to more business being done and it generated more catering jobs.
