The people have spoken and Fine Gael must listen
Michael D Higgins is an intellectual and an idealist. He is also a canny politician. Hard content lurks beneath his purple prose. In the chats (frequent, one hopes) between the new President and the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny would do well to listen carefully.
The president-elect seeks nothing less than a transformation of Irish society, resulting in "making the values of equality, respect, participation in an active citizenship, the characteristics of the next seven years".
These are words of hope at a terrible time. But how to turn them into reality? The President can aspire and inspire. He cannot rule. Only the Government can govern.
