Taoiseach's handling of McCabe scandal has been just inexcusable
The Taoiseach was forced into uttering a humiliating 'mea culpa' yesterday for talking about a meeting with one of his ministerial colleagues that never actually took place. But that apology will not be enough to excuse his appalling handling of the Sgt Maurice McCabe controversy, especially over the past few days.
Nor will the setting-up of a tribunal of inquiry instead of the original idea of a commission which would, conveniently, have been held in private. The commission proposal was dead in the water on Monday evening the minute the McCabes denounced the idea of a holding any investigation in private.
Did it not occur to anybody on the Government side to try to find out from the McCabes if a private inquiry would satisfy them?
