Support for Higgins broad but not deep
Following the publication of the most recent opinion poll showing him with 36pc of the vote it is now clear that the presidential election is Michael D Higgins' to lose. With the former Labour cabinet minister running 12pc ahead of the Fine Gael candidate Gay Mitchell, it will take the political equivalent of an earthquake to deny Mr Higgins the Aras when the votes are counted in seven weeks time.
However, while Mr Higgins' support runs wide it doesn't run deep with 33pc of voters still not knowing which candidate they will support.
This means that there is still the possibility of a new candidate entering the race and upsetting the odds.
