Stronger Aer Lingus numbers show potential for transatlantic ties
THE latest set of strong passenger figures from Aer Lingus during June should be welcomed by everyone, not just those with a direct interest in the airline.
The dramatic rise in the number of passengers carried by it to and from the United States – up 17.2pc to 116,000 – is a testament to the success of 'The Gathering' as a tourism initiative but also highlights the strong trade links that continue to flourish between our two countries. The confirmation this week of the relaunch of a Dublin-San Francisco route next year by Aer Lingus also serves to underscore the depth of those ties, with tech giants such as Google and Facebook having pushed for its restoration.
One stockbroker says Aer Lingus is now one of the best airlines in Europe, at least from a financial point of view. It's the kind of praise that would have been unthinkable a few years ago.
