It is greatly regrettable that such a blunt instrument as a work stoppage is being used to highlight the problem of hospital overcrowding.

The HSE has already said elective procedures must be cancelled in seven hospitals due to next Tuesday's nurses' strike.

One has sympathy with nurses, finding themselves having to negotiate obstacle courses with aisles packed with trolleys and sick patients all because of inadequate staffing.
