Soaring energy costs hit hard

Despite the recent sharp falls in energy prices on the international commodity markets, Bord Gais is expected to apply to the Energy Regulator for yet another price increase, expected to be at least 10pc.

If this price increase is granted, it will push the average family's annual gas bill up by a further €88 to almost €1,000 per year.

And that's unlikely to be the end of the energy price increases for households. Although electricity prices have been deregulated, it is widely expected that the ESB and other suppliers will increase electricity prices by at least 5pc -- over half of all the electricity consumed in Ireland is generated from natural gas.
