Say no to flowerpot diplomacy, Enda
ONE of the more embarrassing moments in Irish history was the era of 'teapot diplomacy', when Mr Haughey attempted to woo Mrs Thatcher over to his views on Irish unity via the gift of a silver Georgian teapot.
Even this debacle was surpassed last week by the set of political brambles the Government got itself entangled in after the Taoiseach fell over a flowerpot at a press conference.
And though the subsequent hysterical response was farcical in its incompetence, it also raised issues of real concern. At a minimum it fed a growing suspicion that Mr Kenny has designs on creating a relationship with the media that would not be dissimilar to that previously enjoyed by Mr Berlusconi in Italy . . . or Mr Haughey with the Irish Press.
