Risk of dire consequences if we don't pull our weight
News reported in this paper today that Germany's deputy finance minister sees Ireland as the model for European reform will send some members of the Government into the Easter break with a bounce in their step. Fine Gael ministers in particular will relish the praise, not least because it comes after the party's success in the Meath East by-election.
German deputy finance minister Steffen Kampeter, writing in this week's edition of the influential banking magazine 'Euroweek', has singled out Ireland for praise. He went so far as to hold up our willingness to roll-up our sleeves to cope with the financial crisis as a role model for other struggling nations.
In his article, the uncompromising Mr Kampeter insists that Germany is a success precisely because it has taken tough measures at home.
