Prison report must not be allowed to gather dust
PRISON is the right place for criminals who do untold harm to decent people trying to get on with their lives. It is undoubtedly the best place for people who commit violent crimes. But there are often better options than just locking up those people who break the law in less serious and non-violent ways. In Ireland, we have tended to lock up more people in recent years and too often for less serious offences.
Today, we carry details of a new report from TDs and senators on the Oireachtas Justice Committee.
Its recommendation that jail sentences under six months be commuted to work on community projects appears to be worth taking on board.
