Posturing on health insurance
As private health insurance customers brace themselves for huge premium increases in the New Year, the posturing of Health Minister James Reilly on the issue is becoming increasingly hard to tolerate.
Yesterday Dr Reilly opined that health insurance premiums would only have to rise by 4pc to compensate the VHI and the other providers for the extra cost of paying for public beds in accident and emergency departments.
According to the minister, there is "little need" for increased premiums. This is despite this week's Budget pencilling an extra €143m of revenue from private patients.
