There are not too many candidates in the running when selecting a global voice with moral authority.

Pope Francis's American addresses probably have earned him a place in the international pecking order. He chose not to mince his words on a swathe of issues, from immigration to inequality.

His words were all the more potent because it was a voice of humility; in other times the hauteur of Rome might have carried the day, but Pope Francis set a tone of empathy and inclusivity.
