Political point-scoring won't help our recovery
TIMING is everything. For the past two weeks, the Independent News and Media (INM) Group has revealed details of the reckless attitude of some bankers at the now defunct Anglo Irish Bank. The Anglo Tapes have sent shockwaves through Irish society. But the political response to the recordings has been predictably insular and partisan.
Rather than deal with the implications of the content of the Anglo Tapes, the Fine Gael-led Coalition rounded on its ancient rivals, Fianna Fail, and tried to exploit the recordings for political gain.
The tone of the political debate was set by Taoiseach Enda Kenny, who has worked hard to garner his reputation as a statesman.
