Points system is tough but fair
Today the "points race" peaks as students receive their offers of third-level places from the Central Applications Office. And for all the complaints about the stress suffered by the candidates, for all the debate about the defects of the points system, the signs are good.
At the most practical level, far more places will be offered to science and mathematics students. That will help, in time, to remedy the deficiency in the numbers graduating in those subjects.
This is an absolute precondition if Ireland is to remain a hi-tech economy.
