Picture paints a thousand words
During President Barack Obama's visit to Ireland last May, the Taoiseach's Department paid €1,000 for pictures of cabinet ministers and other prominent persons in the company of our distinguished guest.
This was part of a total €9,500 spent over two years on Obama-related pictures. The others were taken at St Patrick's week events in Washington.
Nobody could object to official spending on the highlight of the Irish-American year. The annual handing over of the bowl of shamrock to the president by the Taoiseach may arouse little or no excitement here, but we do not need telling that the publicity is priceless.
