Pensions row reveals disunity

YESTERDAY at Arbour Hill, Brian Cowen said that the country was "at a defining moment" and we needed to show unity of purpose. Profoundly true, on both counts. We have reached yet another "defining moment" in the financial and economic crisis, and we need unity of purpose as we struggle to extricate ourselves from our predicament.

But in that struggle, we need leadership. And as Mr Cowen approaches the second anniversary of his attainment of the exalted office of Taoiseach, his record in that regard is poor, bordering on non-existent.

Also at Arbour Hill, he said: "I don't want to get involved in particular issues." This was his way of dodging questions about the Dail and ministerial pensions which Maire Geoghegan-Quinn has continued to draw since she became a European Commissioner.
