Our mental health patients deserve better care than this
Today in this newspaper we detail how a report has revealed that a 15-year-old person with serious mental illness had to spend three nights on a trolley at Waterford Regional Hospital because of a lack of beds in the local mental health unit. It takes no leap of imagination to realise how this adds to a family's stress.
At the same time a series of reports on mental health centres for children and adults has revealed lengthy waiting lists, meaning youngsters who need to be admitted to hospital must wait for months. Even in this time of economic retrenchment these reports from the Mental Health Commission make for disturbing reading.
There are a number of worrying things about this latest news. The first is that we have known for some time that the numbers working in the mental health services have fallen significantly in recent years.
