Osama bin Laden and Ireland

As we report in today's paper, the leadership of Osama bin Laden's al-Qa'ida terrorist group seem to have had a keen interest in matters Irish.

At the same time as he was holed in his Abbottabad lair, Bin Laden was also exploring the possibility of persuading the Irish population, sickened by repeated scandals within the Catholic Church, to convert en masse to Islam.

While Bin Laden's musings can be dismissed as the fantasies of an increasingly irrelevant on-the-run terrorist, perhaps we should not be so flippant.
