Optimism, but still challenges ahead

"WE are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."

Finance Minister Michael Noonan followed Oscar Wilde's dictum yesterday and looked beyond our present problems towards the stars and the return of economic independence.

Mr Noonan spoke in broad and optimistic brush strokes to assert that the State can end its dependence on the bailout late next year, even if we don't get some sort of deal to reduce the country's debt burden.
