Only a charity regulator can restore public trust
The Rehab group is one of the biggest disability organisations in Europe, with a turnover of €183m in 2012, the last year for which it filed accounts. It has been generously funded by the Government and, by extension, the taxpayer for many years.
With the revelation of salary 'top-ups' for senior figures in the health and disability sector and the ongoing scandal with the governance of the CRC, it was inevitable that the focus would finally shift to the Rehab Group and the spotlight would once again fall on the salary of its chief executive Angela Kerins.
Justice Minister Alan Shatter ensured this would happen when he revealed that out of lottery sales of €7.2m in 2010 Rehab Lotteries made a profit of €558,000. On one scratchcard product, which had sales of almost €4m, the profit was less than €9,500.
