One thing is clear – we must help those in most need
LEO Varadkar is yet again cast as the political bull in the government china shop. As voters were invited to the polls in the Meath East by-election, the Transport Minister ventured some comments on mortgage arrears which left the Taoiseach busy, er, 'clarifying' matters.
In essence Mr Varadkar said a new process to assess potential help with mortgage arrears may in practice mean a mother having to quit work where childcare costs exceed her earnings.
As the political balloon went up, the Taoiseach was soon in the Dail chamber insisting no parents – and especially no women – seeking help to resolve their mortgage dilemma would be coerced into quitting work. That begged another question: How can the Taoiseach really know that?
