On the money trail at last
PERHAPS the Government is not as powerless to deal with overpaid bankers as the Taoiseach seems to think. Under attack in the Dail yesterday, Mr Cowen insisted that the Government is precluded by law from countering the Bank of Ireland's chief executive's €1.5m pension top-up.
But the pressure from all quarters obviously paid offf with Mr Boucher's decision last night to effectively hand back his top-up.
Mr Cowen also insisted that everything that could be done is being done to recover a €1m bonus paid to the former Irish Nationwide building society boss Michael Fingleton. We await the outcome of that saga with interest.
