Not so fast, Adams

One of the lighter moments in a grim week was provided by Gerry Adams's critique of proposals for an Oireachtas wine label. It was a nice try but if the Sinn Fein leader thinks he can so speedily return to his normal lofty perch on the moral high ground without dealing with the droppings from his past he can forget it.

The dilemma Mr Adams faces, as he attempts to slink away from yet another disreputable situation, was best summarised by the activist Eamon McCann, who having cited previous loud calls by Sinn Fein for the resignation of Catholic prelates over their role in Ireland's ongoing child abuse scandal, noted, "what was sauce for the Catholic goose should be sauce for the Provo gander''.
