Even the most willing workhorse begins to wilt when the struggle is always uphill, and the load increased.

Hence, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar's decision to focus on helping middle-income earners in the Budget is welcome. But even as he was addressing his Cabinet, new figures revealed how we are the second most indebted country in the world, burdened with about €44,000 per head of population. It is a calculus that should be borne in mind when it comes to future giveaways.

Mr Varadkar has also been unapologetic about his resolution to wipe out welfare fraud. His rowing back on a promise to name and shame all cheats ought not signal any sign of tolerance. His intention to channel scarce resources where they are most urgently needed is admirable, and must not be misconstrued as the opening salvo in a class war, as some would seek to present.
