New competition on health cover

Buyers of private health insurance have had a bad time of it in recent years. Premiums have shot up to levels which verge on the unaffordable -- and in some cases literally are unaffordable.

When the price averages €2,400 a year for a family of two adults and two children, it is no wonder that customers are abandoning the system and relying on the public health service.

Thus far, increased competition does not appear to have had any effect on the inexorable price rises.
