Never got in on the Games

Citius, Altius, Fortius translates from the original Latin as Faster, Higher, Stronger. It's a fusion of the aspirational and inspirational. It is also, as you will no doubt recognise, the slogan for the Olympic Games.

The spirit of which was hardly reflected in the Irish Government's stated intention of piggy-backing the greatest show on earth to attract as many athletes here as possible in the run-up to the opening.

Today we reveal how slow we were out of the blocks to get in on the act.
