Much value in new blood, despite Moran departure
The departure of Minister Shatter has, perhaps, overshadowed the announcement that John Moran, secretary general of the Department of Finance, is to leave his post shortly. Coming at the midpoint of the current Government this puts the spotlight once again on the present state of the economy.
It was hoped that Mr Moran was the vanguard of a new breed of civil servant, people who had made a distinguished career for themselves before entering public service. Mr Moran appeared to fit the bill perfectly as a qualified solicitor, businessman and former CEO of a Swiss bank.
It has to be accepted that along with Michael Noonan, Mr Moran has been instrumental in restoring the name of Ireland in international circles.
