Mentality of the barrack room

THE London Times once famously compared the jail sentence for Mick Jagger on a minor drugs charge with the act of breaking "a butterfly on a wheel".

In fairness, the attempt to discipline Detective Kieran O'Reilly over his appearance on the popular drama Love/Hate does not quite approach those territories.

But art can imitate life in the strangest of fashions and the treatment of a respected undercover garda is symptomatic of the escalating rise of an authoritarian culture that is as hostile to individual liberty and free spirits as was the case in the UK of the 1960s.
