Mean plan to save money will hurt most vulnerable
TODAY we bring you news of a plan which will make it more difficult for many pensioners and disabled people to get grants to make their homes more habitable.
The changes, which were given to local authorities over the holiday period, were introduced on the back of a review of a series of grants to adapt homes. The great irony of the changes is that if people are unable to continue living in their homes because the home isn't adapted to meet their needs, they may well end up in much more expensive accommodation needing care paid for by the State. It would indeed be a very false saving.
But in the meantime a grave injustice risks being done to some of our most vulnerable citizens. At issue are three schemes: a housing adaptation grant for disabled people; a housing aid scheme for older people; and a mobility grant aid scheme.
