Shared history, shared challenges, shared future was the text on the podium at the Complesso Santa Maria Novella in Florence yesterday as Theresa May delivered her latest back-pedal in the Brexit negotiations.

Anyone other than the British would regard it as ironic to be referring to a shared future when they see their future as separate to the rest of the European Union.

The British prime minister proposed a two-year transition after Britain's departure from the European Union in 2019, during which the UK would continue to pay into the bloc's budget.
