Maths students must keep nerve
The Government's decision to award a 25-point bonus to any student passing higher-level Leaving Cert maths seems to be yielding results with the number of those planning to sit the higher-level paper in next month's state examinations up by 24pc on the numbers who did so last year.
That's the good news. The bad news is that, with a week still to go before the Leaving Cert kicks off, a large number of students will almost certainly opt to sit the lower-level maths paper at the last minute. Last year a quarter of all those who had originally planned to sit the higher-level maths paper eventually sat the lower-level paper.
Will there be a similar rate of attrition this year? Even if there is, the numbers sitting the higher-level maths paper will still be considerably higher than in 2011.
